Wireless broadband internet access providing IP based services to mobile users is growing rapidly worldwide and state of the art systems cannot support future requirements. 3GPP Long Term Evolution is the enhancement of the UMTS air interface based on OFDM/MIMO preparing the road to future 4G. This future mobile communication system, which is currently being standardized in 3GPP, shall provide data rates up to 100Mbps with latency values below 5ms and shall thus make UMTS competitive for the next decade. The scalable OFDM technology allows a flexible spectrum allocation in existing and new frequency bands. In 4G the technology based on Advanced LTE shall provide data rates up to 1Gbps.
